A Home Performance Contractor Network – Energy Advisor, (HPCN-EA) is a BC professional certified by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) to assess the energy performance of homes using the EnerGuide Rating System. These advisors provide impartial, third-party energy audits, which include blower door tests and air leakage testing, to help homeowners and builders identify areas for improvement. Their detailed reports and recommendations help create a strategy for increasing a home’s energy efficiency, improving comfort, and potentially qualifying for government rebates and incentive programs.
What is The HPCN Contractor List?
The Home Performance Contractor Network (HPCN) is a British Columbia (BC) registry of qualified home-upgrade contractors and energy advisors managed by the Home Performance Stakeholder Council. It serves as a trusted, unbiased resource for homeowners to find professionals who meet specific training, business, and ethical standards for energy-efficient retrofits. Contractors in the HPCN undergo ongoing quality assurance and are required to maintain business licenses, insurance, and provide standard labor warranties, ensuring high quality and consistency in home performance services.
What Does a HPSC Energy Advisor Do?
- Vetted Professionals:
Energy Advisors and Contractors are screened to ensure they have the proper trade designations and training qualifications for energy-efficient home renovations. They must have a minimum 3-years experience in their Trade. - Ongoing Quality Assurance:
HPCN members are subject to continuous review and quality assurance checks to ensure they maintain high standards. - Code of Conduct:
Members must agree to a code of conduct that includes ethical business practices, high customer service standards, and timely responses to customer concerns. - Business Requirements:
Registered companies must hold valid business licenses for each city they serve, $2 Million+ General Liability & Ommissions insurance, and be in good standing with WorkSafeBC. Additionally Airtight adds being rated A+ the Better Business Bureau, belonging to the local Chamber of Commerce, and the Canadian Association of Consulting Energy Advisors, CACEA. - Whole-Home Approach:
The network promotes the “house-as-a-system” concept, as illustrated to the left, encouraging a whole-home approach to energy retrofits for increased comfort, safety, and health. - Unbiased Resource:
The HPCN operates independently and does not charge membership fees to participating contractors, allowing it to remain an unbiased resource for homeowners. - Mandatory for Rebates:

What Is An Energy Audit?
A licensed Energy Advisor will conduct a comprehensive analysis of your home’s building envelope, insulation, air sealing, and mechanical systems. All personal data collected is strictly protected by Federal and BC Privacy laws.
Follows House as a System Framework
The Auditor should be the first one on site to start the renovation process because they are best building science trained and energy focused to discover all the qualities and opportunities in each unique home.
Uses Integrated Design Process
Shares the EnerGuide reports and F280 Heat Loss form with other HPCN Trades so we can better work together for the Homeowner’s sole benefit.
This helps discover the priority renovations and quantify the correct size of the heating and cooling systems to avoid over-sizing.
Uses Specific Tools:
Advisors use specialized equipment, such as a blower door, a manometer flow instrument to measure air leakage and evaluate your home’s building envelope performance, and a thermal camera to evaluate insulation performance.
Provides an EnerGuide Rating:
After the evaluation, they model using NRCan Hot2000 software a detailed report with the home’s energy efficiency rating, which is comparable to similar homes in your area.
Recommends Upgrades:
The Homeowner and Upgrade Reports includes personalized recommendations for energy-efficient upgrades to improve comfort and reduce utility costs.
Offers Guidance on Programs:
They can explain how their evaluation and recommendations can help you qualify for government incentive programs and rebate programs, such as directly from the CleanBC Energy Savings Program.
How to Find a Home Performance Contractor Network Energy Advisor?
As a member of the Home Performance Contractor Network, Airtight Energy Advisors is approved for various rebate programs offered by BC government and utilities. BC programs that require a Home Performance Energy Advisor may also require additional HPCN Trade requirements.
