Heat Pump Rebates – Nanaimo and RDN

Nanaimo is located on the central-East coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Nanaimo is called the Harbor City because of the protective Islands that shelter the Departure Bay docks. It is one of the fastest growing cities in BC with about 110,000 population.

The city of Nanaimo Sustainability and Regional District of Nanaimo council are leaders in environmental and sustainable policies that protect the natural wealth of the area. The RDN was quick to adopt the BC Energy Step Code in 2018, and is now having Builders meet Energy Step-3 in Part-9 residential buildings and the highest Zero Carbon Step EL-4 since 2024. The Municipalities have offered rebate “Top-Ups” through Better Homes BC and in the past directly by online application. Mid-Island Home Builders will now be familiar with the Step Code Compliance pathway through the advisor, like Airtight Energy has served since 2017.

• Pre-Permit Step Code Checklist – completed by Airtight for the Builder to get the Building Permit.
• Mid-Construction Blower test – to reveal any holes in the envelope so they can be patched before Gyproc boarding.
• As-Built Step Code Final – completes the energy project and finalizes the home for an Occupancy Permit.

Existing Home Owners can engage Airtight to properly assess the places where heat loss is happening in your home, and how much energy is being consumed, through detailed and unbiased reports. We can produce a Heat Loss calculation that is required on most new heat pump rebates before installation for accurate sizing. Our TECA F280-12 Heat Loss calculation report is the gold standard that BC Hydro and Fortis BC have in their qualifications for heat pump rebates.

There are rebates to help homeowners in the Nanaimo and District area.

• $40,000 Canada Greener Homes Loan program offers an interest-free 10-year loan to upgrade residential homes with Heat Pumps, Insulation, Windows, and more. The program has standard qualifications online, and does require an Energy Advisor to produce a Pre and Post renovation EnerGuide evaluation.
• Better Homes BC offers a large choice of rebates that should be added to other rebates.
• Nanaimo and the Regional District of Nanaimo offer ‘top-up’ rebates for the Pre and Post evaluations, plus other energy conserving renovations.
